Why Scouting?
There is a reason for everything boys do in Cub Scouting. Apart from the fun and excitement, the aim of Cub Scouting is to help boys grow into good citizens who are strong in character and personally fit. This is why we say that Cub Scouting is fun with a purpose.
Who is Akela?
Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, based Cub Scouting on one of the stories in Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book called "Mowgli's Brothers." We know it as the story of Akela and Mowgli. Akela is the leader of the wolf pack. Just as that story says, in a real wolf pack all the wolves look to Akela, the leader, for guidance on when to work, when to learn, when to play. Our Den leaders and Pack leaders all act as Akela for our Cub Scouts, and it is vital that Parents act as Akela also! Parents help the scouts complete all of the rank requirements and provide a foundation for everything a scout does.
What are the requirements to join Cub Scouts?
Cub Scouts must be entering Kindergarten or age 6 to join Lion Cubs, entering first grade or age 7 to join Tiger Cubs, entering second grade or age 8 to join Wolf Cubs, entering third grade or age 9 to join Bear Cubs and entering fourth or fifth grade or ages 10 or 11 to join Webelos Scouts.
What does Cub Scouting offer boys?
Cub Scouting offers fun and challenging activities that promote character development and physical fitness. Service projects, ceremonies, games, and other activities guide boys through the core values and give them a sense of personal achievement. Through positive peer group interaction and parental guidance, boys also learn honesty, bravery, respect and much more.
How does participation in Cub Scouting affect participation in other activities?
The Cub Scout program is designed to compliment many other extracurricular activities. Typical time commitment is two Den meetings and one Pack meeting per month. Boys who participate in organized sports, music programs, academic or community activities can be recognized for these activities though Cub Scout belt loops and pins which are worn on their uniform.
What are the responsibilities of a parent?
Parents are very important in Cub Scouting. The young boys depend on parents and leaders to guide and direct their activities and encourage their journey. Specifically, parents provide help and support for the den and pack, work with their scouts on projects and achievements, attend pack meetings and attend and assist with outings.
What does Webelos mean?
Webelos is short for We'll Be Loyal Scouts. Webelos are Cub Scouts in fourth and fifth grade.
Do Cub Scouts go camping?
Yes! There are a number of Scout sponsored camping opportunities throughout the year. They attend with a parent or possibly their entire family.
What activities do Cub Scouts do?
Cub Scouts can earn badges and pins in almost any activity you can imagine. Our specific pack and our dens host a number of activities and events too including:

- Blue & Gold Banquet - to recognize Scouts achieving their next rank
- Pinewood Derby
- Raingutter Regatta
- Cuboree Campout
- Cub Scout Olympics

How much does it cost to join?
Pack registration fee is $95.00/year due at the time of registration (for new members - see attached registration form) or by the September Pack meeting (for returning members). All checks are payable to Pack 190. This fee covers the national Boy Scouts of America (BSA) registration, BSA insurance, an annual subscription to Boy’s Life magazine and Awards, recognition items, Pack meeting expenses and many Pack events.
When is a good time to join?
Pack 190 welcomes new scouts year-round. New scouts typically join toward the end of their school year - in May/June timeframe - where the boys participate in the Bridging Ceremony. We host activities over the Summer and resume a more structured schedule at the start of the next school year in August/September timeframe.
How much fundraising goes on?
Our Pack budget is supplemented by an annual popcorn sale. The Boy Scouts of America conduct this sale nationwide through the Trail’s End Company of Indiana. The sale take place in the fall and the Scouts team up to sell outside of local merchants as well as to their family, friends and neighbors.
