Why do we sell Popcorn and Camp Cards?

As a non-profit, self-sustaining organization, we have to have revenue to exist.

Since we are also parents of Scouts in the Pack, obviously, we don't want to bankroll the entire operation by ourselves. It takes several thousand dollars each year to run a Pack. Our solution, and the one that is sanctioned by the Boy Scouts of America, is to conduct a series of fundraising events. We do this in conjunction with the Council or District. It feels strange at first, to join and immediately find yourself in the midst of a fundraiser, but know that we will all be jumping right in to   our fall fundraiser — selling popcorn! The council asks every pack to sell a certain amount per scout. Ours is generally $300 to $350 per scout. Some packs do offer a buy out of selling, a $70 donation per scout to the pack. We do not ask that as of yet. We feel that by allowing the boys to work on selling the popcorn they are being given an opportunity to do a"job" and earn their way through the scouting year. They are showing you the parents how much they truly are interested in being a scout and participating in events. You are able to share with them responsibility to the unit, and helping with the family budget. There are also prizes from the Council and the pack. If the boys meet their goal we have been able to convince leaders to get "pied" by the boys  and we even have a Cubmaster, Mr. Foster who will allow his head to be shaved if they reach the Pack Goal! It even ties in with some rank achievements and Webelos pins. But truthfully a boy who learns he is able to earn his way is the true winner.

How do they "earn" money?   Cubbuck$ of course!

The leaders voted to give the boys 20% of the total sales they have in Popcorn Sales. This money is put in a "cubbuck$" account for them to  use towards anything scouting related. For example uniforms, camping equipment, camp fees, big trip, and event fees. You tell us when you want to use the money for fee related items or provide us with a receipt from equipment purchased and we will reimburse you. However if your cub drops out the money stays with the pack. If your scout crosses over and there is money in his account we will transfer it to that Troop if they have scout accounts.

What are Camp Cards?
Camp Cards are the Spring fundraiser done in conjunction with the council. They are discount cards to local businesses. The cost has historically been $10 a card. The boys get $4 of each sale toward their Cubbuck$ account. This fundraiser was started so that boys would be able to earn their way to summer camp. However if the cub can't make it to camp then the money stays in there account until it is used .

The alternative to us having fundraisers is to ask the parents for a whole lot more money in dues each year to operate the Pack . We would truly prefer not to do that!

Friends of Scouting

What is Friends of Scouting?

Friends of Scouting is the annual campaign where the Northeast Georgia Council asks Scouting families, businesses and civic-minded citizens to support our mission of providing the Scouting program to tens of thousands of young people in Northeast Georgia.

Why should I give to Friends of Scouting?

Friends of Scouting provides roughly one-quarter of the money needed to operate the NE-GA Council's Scouting camps, programs and facilities for a calendar year. These camping and training facilities are the "outdoor classrooms" in which Scouts have fun, learn leadership skills and develop into better young men and women. The NE-GA Council spends approximately $200 per Scout each year to deliver these benefits and much more.

I already paid my child's registration and his Pack collects annual dues. Haven't I already supported Scouting?

Your child's registration fee goes directly to the National Office of the Boy Scouts of America. The dues our Pack collect stays with our unit to help pay for trips, belt loops, advancement patches, Webelos pins, academic pins, books, and administrative fees and other activities. None of that money helps the NE-GA Council pay for:

  • Maintaining and staffing the council's 7 camping properties
  • Training thousands of adult volunteer leaders in youth protection
  • Providing programs like Cub Scout Day Camp, Cub Scout Adventure Days, Cub Partner Camp outs, Cub Scout Resident Camp, Webelos Extreme Adventure Camp, Webelos Winter Camp, Boy Scout Summer Camp, Boy Scout Winter Camp, Silver Pines Youth Leadership Training, Venturing Spring and Fall Activities
