GIRL SCOUT PROMISE AND LAW

Juliette Low started the Girl Scout movement in the United States based upon the Girl Guides program in England. Juliette was a friend of Robert Baden-Powell and his family. The Baden-Powells started the Girl Guides program as well as the Boy Scouts. Juliette Low believed that the Girl Guide Promise used in Great Britain would have the same importance for the Girl Scouts in the U.S. That's why all Girl Scouts make the Girl Scout Promise.

When Juliette began Girl Scouts, she wanted to build an organization that would provide exciting opportunities for girls within the framework of a positive values-based movement. The Law is a guide that Girl Scouts agree to live by, it should be used thoughtfully and in everyday of life. Making the Girl Scout Promise and accepting the Girl Scout Law are a very important part of becoming a Girl Scout. 

 

 

 

Girl Scouts across the globe adhere to some form of the Girl Scout Promise and Law. GSUSA follows this Promise and Law:

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.


The Girl Scout Law

 I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.

 

When we recite the Girl Scout Promise and Law, we always give the Girl Scout sign, which we do by raising the 3 fingers on our right hands.
