Pack 260 FAQs

v  What is Cub Scouts and what do you do?

o   The Cub Scouting program offers fun and challenging activities that promote character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness.  Scouts learn the importance of family and community as they participate in service projects, ceremonies, games, and indoor and outdoor fun.  Boys work both with their parents and their den to complete advancements projects and activities.  We strive to put together a program that is fun and exciting. We also attend several outings throughout the year that the boys look forward to, from Blazer and Winterhawk games to sledding and camping.

v  How old does my boy need to be?

o   Our “Pack” is comprised of several “Dens” that group boys of the same age. Each den has an age-appropriate program developed just for them. Each den can have anywhere from 4-10 boys. Each Den is led by parent volunteers (and you are more than welcome to jump in and help us out!!) The basic age break-downs are:

§  1st grade or age 6 = Tiger Scouts

§  2nd grade or age 7 = Wolf Scouts

§  3rd grade or age 8 = Bear Scouts

§  4th grade or age 9 = Webelos Scouts

      • 5th Grade or age 10 = Arrow of Light Scouts

v   Where do you meet and how often?

o   We currently meet every Tuesday from 7:00 – 8:00 PM at Rock Creek Christian Center (21450 NW Rock Creek Blvd. Portland, OR 97229). Times may vary slightly.

o   Handbooks are designed to be worked on by a Cub Scout and his parents.  Helping your son progress towards rank is a great way to spend quality one-on-one time.  Activities may be worked on together as a den, but more commonly at home, whenever you have time, in any order.

v  How much does it cost?

o   Our pack collects $119.00 from each new boy that joins in September. Our goal is to provide a fun and educational experience for your child. Of the $119, $24.00 will go to the Cascade Pacific Council. The Council is responsible for printing all official literature and overhead associated with the Boy Scouts of America. The remaining $95 will go to the Pack to cover awards, supplies, and Pack events for your child that they will earn through-out the year.

o   The next cost will be the uniform and book that your child will need. The uniform [if purchased new] cost about $40, including all the patches they will need. Scouts are asked to wear the blue uniform shirt, hat, and a neckerchief and slide for their rank. Each boy needs a Cub Scout handbook and those cost $5-$9 depending on the den your child will be in.

v  Is there any way I could get some financial help with Cub Scouting Costs?

o   Upon your initial BSA registration, all Scouts need to pay the remaining Pack dues and registration by October 31st of the current Scouting year. This time laps allow families to defer the cost while they have a chance to participate in the fall fundraiser.

o   Pack 260 currently participates in two Boy Scouts of America fundraisers. The first fundraiser begins immediately in September. 100% of proceeds (not revenue) earned from the fall fundraiser go into individual Scout Accounts.  Scout Accounts can be used to pay for all of Pack 260’s Dues and Registration. Should there be a balance left over following Dues and Registration, the Scout Account can be used for other Pack 260 events.

v
Other Pack 260 events and costs for Activities and Summer Camps?
o Our pack has many optional activities that Scouts and Parents can participate in, these do have additional costs, Outings such as Summer Camps, Pack Overnighters for example at the Newport Aquarium, Evergreen Aviation Museum, Oregon Zoo or the USS Turner Joy (in Bremerton WA) Scouts can earn the money for these events through fund raising.

v  Can my son join in mid year?

o   Absolutely, it is never too late to join. All Dues and Registration fees will be prorated to reflect the time left in the Scouting Year.

v  Where can new uniforms be purchased?

o   The uniform can be purchased locally at La Haie’s in downtown Hillsboro (227 E Main St, Hillsboro, OR 97123, 503-648-2341).

v  Do you perform background checks on parent volunteers?

o   Yes, the Council will perform a background check on all parent volunteers. The Committee Chair and the Charter Origination Representative will call references. Cub Scout Pack 260 only puts adults who demonstrate the highest morals and values, and whose character is in the same mind set of the Boy Scouts of America and Harvest Community Church. The safety of your child is always our first priority and rest assured that each boy is never left alone with a parent. We also encourage parents participate and help out during the meetings. The den leaders can always use extra hands and besides, IT’S FUN!!
